My Info
My name is Paolo Kalaw and I am an entrepreneur by vocation - my main role being CEO of the Frontier Group - which includes Frontier Dental Laboratories, the California Center for Advanced Dental Studies, Crown Ventures Private Equity Fund, and other companies. I am also a director of YYOGA, and Incoming Chairman of the Young President's Organization, BC Chapter. This blog is my first ever foray into the blogosphere - hope you enjoy it. By the way, is blogosphere really a word?
Advice of the Day - seeing as it is Chinese New Year, I thought I would share this one:
If you want 1 year of prosperity, grow grain.
If you want 10 years of prosperity, grow trees.
If you want 100 years of prosperity, grow people.
The most successful businesses I have been involved in is where the individuals were given a chance to develop and grow - I believe this is not only good business but a social responsibility.
A bit about me - I am a first generation immigrant to Canada, moving to the Vancouver area when I was 15 years old. I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BSc in Microbiology. I worked for two different corporations when I got out of school and started my first company when I was 27 years old (using $$ that I got by selling my car and borrowing from family). The business grew from 5 employees to over 1000 in 9 years. It was ranked as one of the fastest growing companies in Canada 5 years in a row. In 2006 I sold that company to a private equity group out of New York. I have now moved on to my next series of business adventures.
Since I started in business, I have done numerous acquisitions, IPO's, expansions, contractions, you name it ... and I have made my share of mistakes. Actually, even way more than my share :) Through all this, all I can say is:
"Happy is the man with his hobby as his vocation" - I have to look up who said this but it rings true for me. My hobby is my vocation. As I always tell my friends, business is my art and the world is my palette.
