The Road To Truth

I suddenly felt like sharing this quote on this week's blog. I got it from Billy Beane, the manager of the Oakland A's and the character that Brad Pitt played in the movie Moneyball. I met Billy Beane last Thursday and I have to say, I learned a lot from him. I will share some of his insights later (it's 1AM my time and i better go to bed). In the mean time enjoy:

The road to truth is long, and lined the entire way with annoying bastards.

Maybe words I would not use myself but they drive home a point: The road to truth does have a lot of resistance.

Billy was the first to use quantitative analysis to manage his baseball team. It was controversial at the time but has now changed the way teams bring together talent. My take home from him is this:

1. Designing and measuring key performance benchmarks can take you or your team to a higher level. It is important to ensure you are measuring the things that matter and not just the things the everyone else measures.

2. Just because you can measure it, don't underestimate the leadership and soft skills necessary to get buy in from your team. That is equally as important.

3. Even with all the analysis, you won't be correct all the time. You just have to be correct more often than your competition.

A short blog, but I hope it gives you an insight that you can use in your day to day activities.

But then again, what do I know? I'm just a guy making my way in this world.
